Mary Annette (McDowell) Hunter, 78, of Roswell, New Mexico and formerly of Pampa, Texas, Lawton, Oklahoma, and Fletcher, Oklahoma, passed away on Wednesday evening, November 28, 2018, at Lovelace Medical Center, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Mary was the wife of the late MSgt Jimmy Leroy Hunter, (U.S. Army, retired), who passed away in 2006 and who was also from Pampa, Texas. They were married over 39 years at the time of his death. 

Mary was born in Pampa, Texas on October 30, 1940.  She was the firstborn child to the late William Henry McDowell and Mary Elizabeth (Crocker) McDowell (who was married to Ernest Crow at the time of her death).

Mary was raised in Pampa, Texas, where she resided until her marriage to Jimmy Leroy Hunter. She then resided in Lawton and then Fletcher, Oklahoma for 41 years. In 2008, she moved to Roswell, New Mexico, where she resided until her death in 2018.

Mary was saved at an early age at a small church in Lefors, Texas.  She then attended the First Freewill Baptist Church of Pampa, Texas until she moved away. Upon moving to Lawton, she immediately became a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Lawton, Oklahoma, where she worshiped for over 36 years. From 2008 until 2018, she was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Roswell, New Mexico. 

Mary worked tirelessly her entire life. She was a waitress, cook, baker, factory worker, and seamstress. After she stopped working outside the home, she was a homemaker and caretaker.

Throughout her life, she was a tireless volunteer and aid to others. She volunteered in several ministries that aid the homeless and poor adults and children of Roswell.  She regularly worked to provide for and ensure that those who were home bound or unable to get around, had transportation to church and to any services and activities they needed to attend. She was an inspiration to all around her.

She is survived by three sons, Nick Stewart and wife Patti, of Hays Kansas, Jimmy Hunter and wife Jeanette, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Dustin Hunter and wife Jennifer, of Roswell, New Mexico, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, a sister, Jowannah Shackelford and her husband, Sam, of Pampa, Texas and a brother, Rodney McDowell and wife Gina, of Gruver, Texas. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Leroy Hunter, a son, Marty Medley, a daughter, Donna (Medley) Cerrito, a brother, Billy Ray McDowell, of Pampa, Texas, and her parents William Henry McDowell and Mary Elizabeth (Crocker) McDowell.

The funeral for Mary Annette Hunter will take place at the First Freewill Baptist Church, Lawton, OK on December 10, 2018 at 10:30 AM. The address for the Church is 10 South 24th Street, Lawton, OK 73505.

A memorial service is being planned in Roswell, New Mexico and is currently scheduled for January 4, 2019 at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church, Roswell, New Mexico, 500 N Pennsylvania Ave., Roswell, NM 88201.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Mary’s name to the First Baptist Church of Roswell or the Salvation Army of Roswell, 612 W. College Blvd., Roswell, NM 88201.
