In 1:15-23 Paul addresses the place of Jesus Christ in God’s plan of salvation. In 15-17 His work is in relation to God (15) and in relation to the entire universe (16-17).
First, Jesus revealed the full reality of the Father, an exact image: “Christ is as God is” (15a, NLV). His perfect revealing of the Father affirms that He holds preeminence over the universe; He is superior to creation. “Firstborn” refers to Jesus’ resurrection. He is not “from among” created beings. Paul’s wording in the context of Colossians and interpreted with grammatical correctness means Jesus “ranks higher than everything that has been made” (15b, NCV).
Second, Jesus relates to all things as Creator (16-17). The universe is a “Christ-created universe” (16). “By Him” confirms Jesus as the divine cause of every created thing - Creation exists because HE brought it into existence. Believers must be Christ-centered because the universe itself is Christ-dependent for its existence. As a result, in every dimension and by every means of observation, the entire universe is His handiwork.
Among the created powers that exist, Jesus is beyond question the predominant power over the universe. He is superior regardless of any earthly power (“thrones”). He is superior to any government of any dominion on the map. He is superior to all claims of the right to rule. He is superior to authority at any level. Peter acted on this basis: “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).
What does all of this mean for people, whether believer or non-believer? Jesus is Creator (“through Him”), so creation in whatever form is accountable to Him. Creation exists for His benefit and purpose (“for Him”). God instills purpose in everything He creates.
Therefore, the purpose of creation is to honor its Creator, Jesus Christ, whether that comprises one second or one lifetime. Whether the reference is to one task or to one nation, nothing of any measure is exempt.
This is the case because Jesus Christ is both Lord and Provider of the universe (17). As Lord, He is superior in every way (17a) – “before” in time (eternally) and before in His preeminent position.
As Provider, He is the sustainer and binding force of the universe (17b). The Phillips version concludes: “He is both the first principle and the upholding principle of the whole scheme of creation.” Paul leaves no room for compromise, condition, or allowance.
