A Study in the Word – Isaiah’s Background No. 3

The prophet’s message always implied or actually stated God’s revelation.

Although not always stated, sometimes the message’s purpose is explicitly stated.  For example: “’You are My witnesses,’ declares the LORD, ‘And My servant whom I have chosen, in order that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He’” (Isa. 43:10 NAU).

The primary reference point for the prophet’s declaration of the word of Yahweh was the revelation at Sinai (See 2 Kings 17:34-36; 18:12).

This revelation was intended to have a residual effect on Israel: “The things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law” (Deut. 29:29).

Consequently, the message of all the true prophets found its source and foundation in the revelation of God to Israel at Mount Sinai.  When a passage in Isaiah appears to make a reference to a past event and that event is not explicitly identified, it is good practice to assume the reference relates to God’s revelation in the exodus experience of Israel.
