Austin Elementary parking lot/pick-up lanes to be refurbished

While the children may not be in the building, there has been a lot of activity at Austin Elementary in Pampa. Construction equipment is working hard to remake the parking lot.

Pampa Independent School District Superintendent Hugh Piatt said the project was overdue and is also important for when the District shifts to grade-level schools.

“You take an asphalt parking lot and keep providing asphalt on it, as long as that occurs you can build up layers but there comes a point where that doesn’t work anymore,” Piatt said. “With the future planning of our District and grade-level schools, we know that drop-off/pick-up will have more parents than in the past.

“So the new Austin Elementary parking lot will provide a bus lane, a longer front entrance (further south down Duncan) and we will have a bus lane and right-turn only lane that will extend north of the stop light.”

The lane extending north of the light will allow parents to forego the stop light and the stop light will have a left-only and straight-only lanes.

“There’s always been confusion about who is going which direction,” Piatt said. “That will help. The south end of the parking lot will also have additional parking.”
