Briarwood Church partners with area businesses for coat drive

Briarwood Church, located at 1800 W. Harvester, is hosting a coat drive on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Church has partnered with five area businesses for the drive: Brandon’s Flowers (123 N. Cuyler), Chicken Express (2201 Perryton Parkway), Clements Cleaners (1437 N. Hobart), Coffee Shop (220 N. Cuyler) and Coney Island (114 W. Foster).

“People can drop off new or lightly-used clothes in the receptacles at these businesses through Friday, Oct. 30,” pastor Jamisen Hancock said. “Then we will collect them all and dry-clean them all to have ready for Nov. 13 at the church.”

Hancock said he has seen a lot of families in need through the Church’s Feed the Flock program and wants to insure that if the area has another dangerously cold spell during the winter, they are taken care of.

“When we’ve done our Feed the Flock Ministry and gone out into the community and into the neighborhoods or people come to pick up meals, we see a lot of families in need,” Hancock said. “This is just a great ministry for those that may not have the money or the means to buy coats for them or their kids so their kids can be warm. Last winter was extremely cold and they set up places at the Mall and a couple of churches that opened their doors for people to stay. We feel like it’s a great ministry for those that don’t have the money to buy a coat this winter.”

Coats will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Briarwood has held coat drives in the past.

“We’ve done it the last five or six years (aside from COVID-19),” Hancock said. “It’s something that has gone really well so we are doing it again.”

Donors are encouraged to donate coats and jackets of all sizes at the aforementioned locations or the Church itself. For more information, call Briarwood at 806-665-7201.
