Corpus Christi: A Great Vacation Location

Posted

If you happen to be looking for a beach getaway this summer without a huge number of tourists. Head down to Corpus Christi one of my favorite South Texas getaways! Corpus Christi offers something for everyone whether you are looking for a family vacation or a romantic getaway or maybe even a guy’s weekend.

The North Padre Island beaches are situated just a quick drive just outside of town. The beaches offer a clean family-friendly atmosphere. Soak up some sun on these quiet beaches or enjoy a day of deep-sea fishing with one of many local charter companies. Looking for something more relaxing I suggest one of the afternoon cruises of Corpus Christi Bay. If romance is what you seek a night cruises of dinner and dancing is the perfect way to spend an evening. Harrison’s Landing offers everything from sailing to full moon cruises with live music!

Corpus Christi is home to the USS Lexington, nicknamed the Blue Ghost, a WWII battleship now turned museum that offers daily tours. The Lexington was a filming location of the blockbuster hit Pearl Harbor. Not far from the USS Lexington is the Texas State Aquarium. Another interesting historical site is Old Bayview Cemetery the oldest federal cemetery in Texas. Heritage Park offers a glimpse into the past. There are many wonderful museums to choose from including the Texas Surf Museum, the Selena Museum, the Science and History museum. If you are into antique hunting Corpus Christi’s is full of fantastic shops such as the Red Crow Antique mall or the Renaissance

For the sports enthusiast’s check out the Whataburger Field just across the Corpus Christi Harbor bridge from the USS Lexington. Whataburger Field is home to the Hooks, a double-A team affiliated with the Houston Astros. The stadium itself sits along the Corpus Christi Harbor, so expect to view ships passing by the stadium as you enjoy the game! Corpus Christi is also home to the ice hockey team the IceRays. Currently, the IceRays have canceled their 2021 schedule due to Covid 19, but plan to return as soon as conditions permit.

Corpus Christi’s music scene is second to none when it comes to Texas Red Dirt music. Concrete Street Amphitheater, an outdoor venue known for hosting the some of the brightest new stars of the Texas country music scene. Live music can be found throughout the city at any number of clubs nightly.

There are many great festivals throughout the year worth making the pilgrimage South including the Fiesta De La celebrating Tejano singer Selena. Buccaneer Days a tradition of Corpus Christi that began for over 80 years in 1938. The event raises money to support education for the Coastal Bend area. Buccaneer Days include a carnival, rodeo, music, as well as a parade. This year’s event dates are April 29- May 9, 2021, the carnival will be for the entire event, May 2 will host the parade, while the rodeo portion will May 6-9, 2021.

For the foodies check out the Republic of Texas for a the perfect steak along with the best view of Corpus Christi Bay! This one-of-a-kind restaurant is located on the 20th floor of the Omni Hotel in downtown Corpus Christi. If a more laid-back atmosphere with fantastic seafood, the Yard Arm might be the best place for you. You must check out one of Jalisco’s taco shops throughout the city for some truly great Mexican food and the best breakfast burritos! Jalisco’s offers dine-in or drive-through service, the Carne Guisada or Barbacoa tacos are perfect any time of the day. Doc’s is another local favorite that sits on the Oso Bay with nightly music along with great cocktails.
