County Commissioners held meeting on Thursday

The Gray County Commissioners Court met on Thursday morning for a regularly-scheduled meeting.

The meeting had some heavy discussion surrounding their investments, where to invest and what type of accounts to invest their money. Ultimately, the Commissioners stuck with the status quo in regards to their investment policies, but did approve an investment into the FIT Government investment pool.

The Commissioners also approved the purchase of a new bulletin board for public postings on the first floor of the Gray County Courthouse.

Gray County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Lizz Beason said the current bulletin board is too small, especially when the Office has to post about Sheriff’s Office sales.

“This last time we had 30 postings and we have to post for over a month,” Lt. Beason said. “On average we have around 50 we have to post. During that month and a half we also had another posting that’s three to seven pages a week. Those stay up there for a minimum of 10 days to two months.”

Because of the Open Records requirements, there are constraints as to how the postings are displayed including space between postings. Lt. Beason was given the price of around $300 for a “fancy” one, but the County will look into their options.

The Commissioners did approve the extension of the COVID-19 disaster declaration, although Commissioners Lake Arrington and Jeff Haley voted against it.

County Judge Chris Porter said there are no active cases in the county with one case pending. Porter reiterated that while he is tired of dealing with Covid, it’s hard for him not to continue the declaration.

“This is the ability to be able to move fast in case something happens,” Porter said. “I get it, I’m one of the most conservative people I know and I hate government being in the middle of my business. I hate what we’re doing in the courthouse and I am so sick of hearing about the COVID-19 Delta Variant or every other variant there is. I’m sick to death of it. But I don’t want to lose the ability to react at a moment’s notice.”

The Commissioners also approved/tabled the following items:

Approved

• Minutes from the previous meeting.

• Pay Bills as approved by the County Auditor.

• Consider line item transfers.

• Declaring Precinct 2 pickup as surplus property. This is a 2003 Chevy pickup with 350,000 miles. There was a “box fan” listed on the original agenda, but was a typo and was supposed to be a “box van.” As a result, that item was tabled, but the County may have found some use for it later in the meeting.

• Declaring Precinct 4 Fuel Depot as surplus property.

• Approval of government grants for Perry Lefors Airport.

Tabled

• Consider requesting agent change for insurance with Insurica.
