Dossie Lee Nickell, 90 years old, died December 2, 2020 in Amarillo TX.
Dossie was born November 12, 1930 in Hugo, Oklahoma to Jack and Parilee Bogard Nickell
Services were at 2 pm Friday December 4, 2020 at Lagrone/Blackburn/Shaw visitation to follow.
Dossie grew up in Eastern Oklahoma, plowing behind a horse and working as a child to help put food on the table but he eventually made his way to Texas. He graduated from Wheeler High School in 1950. Wheeler is where he met and fell in love with Martha Ann Chapman “Tootie”
69 years ago on October 23rd 1951. They ran off to Wellington to get married. They had to wait for the preacher to finish mowing his yard and shower before he would marry them. They also brought Tootie’s best friend as their witness and she even went along on the honeymoon. He was drafted into the army and they moved to Ft Leonardwood, Missouri . He became the dad of 2 little red headed boys Oddie Lee in 1953 and Ricky Joe in 1954. When he got out of the army he moved his family back to the Texas panhandle. He lived in Wheeler, Pampa, White Deer, Stonewall, Colorado, Cimarron, NM, Lake Fork and Howardwick before settling in Amarillo in 2005. Dossie knew everyone, because if he didn’t know you, he would before long and he’d never forget you, either. He had an incredible memory of all the things that happened in his life. He loved to fish for crappie and was a member of Cabot Bass Masters for years. He even tied and sold flies and crappie jigs. He spent every summer at the BarNI in Stonewall Colorado until his health no longer allowed him to go. He worked many jobs from driving heavy equipment, to running a dairy. He worked the day shift at Cabot Corporation in the furnace for many years and worked for Looper Fencing in the evenings. He drove rigs to the coast for Ingersol Rand, ran the lodge and designed and built the campground at whiskey creek for the Cabot family. Retirement only lasted a few years before he was working again. If he wasn’t working he was fishing. Dossie’s last job was working and driving trucks for Center Gas when he was 85 yrs old. He knew to make it in this life, you had to work hard and instilled the same values in his sons and grandkids. When he wasn’t at work you could find him watching his grandkids playing sports or at the clubhouse cooking breakfast, hosting a fish fry or playing games. Very rarely did you see him without his crimson cap or coat on because he loved OU football! Which was known to cause a few arguments because his family loved Texas. Dossie loved life. He also loved his family and was a member of Arden Road Baptist Church. He was proceeded in death by his parents, a sister Bobbie, and a granddaughter Karli Nickell.
He is survived by his wife Tootie of the home, sons Oddie of Amarillo, Joe and wife Dixie of Pampa, 2 grandchildren, Kory Nickell of Midland and Kenzi Nickell of Amarillo
