Going the Distance

Madox Jones, a senior at Pampa High School, will be representing his school and community at the Track & Field State Meet next week. In addition to being a state qualifier in the Discus category, Jones has been a member of the PHS football team for all four years.

Jones expressed his eagerness to compete at the state meet.

“It didn’t hit me until a couple of days ago,” Jones said. “I’m ecstatic. Not everyone gets a chance to do this.”

Though he has made great accomplishments in both sports, Jones notes that the decision to join track was happenstance.

“I played baseball growing up,” Jones said. “I decided I wanted to do another sport and just chose track.”

Earlier this year, Jones signed with Hardin-Simmons University to continue playing football at a college level.

“My freshman year I didn’t play all that much, but once I started playing my sophomore year, colleges started looking at me,” Jones said. “That’s when it really became a reality that I can take one of these opportunities to go and play.”

After a visit and tour from Hardin Simmons, Jones really felt at home with the place.

“They reached out to me about coming for a tour and seeing how I felt about the school,” Jones said. “After just being there I realized it was the place I wanted to be.”

As for his major, Jones is still deciding on whether he will pursue a degree in Sports Management or Strategic Communication.

Jones spent time thanking those in his life who have supported him.

“I want to thank my parents and Coach Arnett,” Jones said.

For those interested in pursuing sports but don’t know where to start, Jones shares his advice.

“You’ve got to try everything and find what is best for you,” Jones said.
