Golf tournament to be held in July to end Alzheimer’s disease

Pampa’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be holding their Inaugural Golf Scramble fundraiser on July 9 at 9 a.m. at Pampa Country Club. Proceeds from the event will benefit Pampa’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s and The Alzheimer’s Association.

“This is a new thing that we did not do last year,” Event Coordinator Jacqueline Braddock said. “It’s a scramble with four-person teams at $75/person including green fees, carts, lunch and prizes. There will be a raffle, as well. The golf scramble is a new big thing we are excited about that.”

Sponsorships are still available for the event with several different levels including the scramble and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sept. 17.

“The walk is going to be Downtown Pampa this year,” Braddock said. “Last year we did it at the football field, which is a perfect location. We wanted to do it again this year. But when we talked about what our true focus is, driving community engagement and spreading awareness/education about Alzheimer’s, we thought about doing it downtown to get local businesses involved.”

The Walk will be in the morning with businesses open, vendors and tables to for education and assistance for Alzheimer’s patients.

“We will also have a place for a bunch of food trucks where people can walk around and places for people to go shopping,” Braddock said. “We’re trying to make a day of it.”

Braddock’s involvement with the Alzheimer’s Association stems from personal experience dealing with the disease.

“My grandparents both had Alzheimer’s and dementia,” Braddock said. “My aunt, as well. We’re pretty deeply affected by it in my family.

“The Alzheimer’s Association in Amarillo hosts a big walk there. But for me, in my business here, we’re trying to drive that engagement with our clients who are affected by Alzheimer’s. Working at Edward-Jones, many of our clients are older. There’s a lot of people affected by Alzheimer’s. It’s really prevalent in what we’re doing.”

Donations raised will go toward the Alzheimer’s Association, which is a national company but is readily available to those in need.

“It goes to support, resources and research,” Braddock said. “The funds go to help with their 24/7 hotline for folks dealing with or caregivers who are living with Alzheimer’s. A lot of donations pay for that to exist. There are people to drive these other resources and the donations go toward research on finding cures.”
