Jimmy H. “Tumbleweed” Northcutt, 85, of Miami, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 in Miami, TX.
Services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, October 1, 2021 at the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Rev. Dennis Williams, retired Baptist minister, officiating. Burial will be 3:30 PM Friday, October 1, 2021 at Hollene Cemetery in Hollene, New Mexico under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
Jimmy was born July 6, 1936 in Clovis, New Mexico to Burnie and Bernice Northcutt. He was a 5th generation descendant of ranchers and cowboys on both sides of his family tree. He graduated from Hereford High School in 1954. Following high school, Jimmy enlisted in the military and served for 3 years in the Veterinary Service and became a farrier for the US Army Pentathlon Equestrian team at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. During his time in the service, he had the privilege of shoeing “Black Jack”, the riderless horse in President John F. Kennedy’s funeral procession. When he was discharged from the military, Jimmy obtained his Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University. He spent his professional years working for the State of Texas and retired as a health inspector.
Jimmy’s passions were history and horses. From an early age, he learned the way of the horse and how to care for them. He was also dedicated to the preservation of the Texas Panhandle history, which led him to fulfilling his vision of the healing of the Battle of Palo Duro. “Return of the Horse Spirit” was a ceremony in which a horse was gifted to the Apaches, the Kiowa, and the Comanches. Jimmy also was involved in multiple dedications, including the Quanah Parker Trails. Jimmy served as the Colonel of the Frontier Regiment of the High Plains 4th Cavalry Reenactment. He led the riderless horse in multiple state and national parades.
He was a cowboy, poet, musician, actor, and played the washtub bass in the The Prairie Heirs of the Palo Duro. He was an avid reader and loved his dog, Bella. Jimmy married Sarah Gill on August 16, 2002 in Canyon and they moved to Miami in 2004 where they attended the First Baptist Church of Miami.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers, Woodrow Northcutt and Ray Northcutt.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah of the home; 2 daughters, Florine Postell and husband Jim of Cincinnati, Ohio and Stephanie Stern and husband David of Venice, California; Sarah’s 2 daughters, Gwen Campell and husband Mark of Amarillo and Mary Ann Morrison and husband John of Claude; brother, Wake Northcutt of Clovis; sister, Sue Deyke and husband Arlo of Longview; 3 grandchildren, Christopher Postell, Matthew Postell, and Daniel Stern; 2 step grandchildren, Amber Minkley and husband Lucas and Ann Christian Morrison; and 2 step great-grandchildren.
