John Thomas Moen

John Thomas Moen – Husband. Father. Grandfather. Great-grandfather. Small-business owner. Friend.

He was an exceptional example of all of these.  Loved and admired by many for his kindness, wisdom, talents, and skills.

Saying that John was a hard worker would be an understatement.   John worked painting houses, heavy equipment, & drilling rigs.  He worked long hours and more than one job, when needed, to raise his young family.

When John, his wife Francie, son Tommy and daughter Amy moved to Las Cruces in 1986, John’s uncle presented them with the opportunity to purchase his business.  Owning and operating Trophy Country allowed John and Francie to provide for their family for many years to come and Trophy Country provided generations of Las Crucens quality awards, plaques, and letter jackets.  John learned how to perfect his craft by learning everything that was needed to make his business a success and his customers satisfied.

John played as hard as he worked.  He enjoyed playing, coaching, and umpiring softball, but his true passion was bird hunting.  The only problem was keeping his skills sharp when it wasn’t hunting season.  This is when he discovered his love of clay-target shooting.  While he was good at any game involving a shotgun, his favorite was skeet.  John won countless awards at the local, state (TX and NM), regional, and national levels.  He was a great shooter, mentor, coach, and fellow competitor.  His greatest reward was exposing new shooters to the game that he loved so dearly.

John donated countless hours to leadership and volunteer efforts with the Sunrise Lions Club, New Mexico Quail, Mesilla Valley Shotgun Sports, and New Mexico Skeet Shooting Association.  He was instrumental in getting the first class shotgun shooting complex built at the Butterfield Shooting Range and has taken great pride in the joy that it has brought to so many shooters – young and not-so-young.

When John’s loving wife and business partner passed away, he was truly devastated, yet determined to carry on – with Trophy Country, shooting, and loving his family dearly. His close friend Ray helped him every step of the way with the business and assisted with everything he needed. Then John met Roseann, and they both knew that it was meant to be.  They married in 2016 and began their adventure together. Everything John did, Roseann was right by his side. They loved doing absolutely everything together. John also became a father-figure to Roseann’s daughter Kendra.  After all of the love he was already sharing, he still had more to give.

Those left to mourn his passing include his wife Roseann Moen of the family home, son Tom Moen (Sarah) of Chicago, Il, daughter Amy Garcia (Ruben) of Las Cruces, stepdaughter Kendra Hernandez of Baltimore, MD, brother Haldane Moen (Deda) of Abilene, TX, sister-in-law Gayla Gillespie, of Lubbock, TX. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Ashley Deleslie, Emily Garcia, Andrew and Matthew Garcia, and great grandchildren K’yvon and Sage and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents Mary Lou and Donald Moen, first wife Frances Moen, and brother James Douglas Moen
