The Junk-to-Treasure Marketplace will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year it will be a little more somber as they will be commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack.
More than 60 vendors are excited to hold the event in it’s ninth year after having last year’s canceled because of COVID-19.
“After not having it last year, 60 percent of our vendors rolled over to this year,” director Debbie Davis said. “They had the option of rolling over or getting a refund. Which I’m proud we did because I heard a lot of other shows didn’t offer a refund or rollover.”
The proceeds from the event go toward Wheel Times, Inc.
“Wheel Times, Inc. has always been the benefactor of Junk-to-Treasure,” Wheel Times, Inc., founder and director, Brad Pingel said. “We’ve partnered with them and they donate all of their proceeds to our non-profit. Which has been a blessing to us.”
There will be some Covid precautions taken, but Davis said masks are not required.
“We will follow whatever the City mandates,” Davis said. “They have not said anything.”
Vendors in the marketplace include retail, crafters, food/desserts, rugs, powder-coating products, soaps, yard flags, pottery, clothing and concession provided by Wheel Times, Inc.
The event includes several volunteers including Susie Dwight, Pam Lash, Sharon Price and Sherry Barrow.
Patriotic, 9/11 commemorative shirts will be available for purchase (from Sandra Britten, $24/up to XL , $26/XXL-XXXL, call 806-681-0512) and there will be a special slideshow on display.
“We’ve accumulated a bunch of pictures of 9/11 from the attack and New York now,” Davis said. “Della Moyer has helped me by getting a bunch of pictures of our area’s first responders. We’re going to do a picture display.”
With this year being the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, Pingel and Davis also wanted to do a 5k to commemorate the event. Participants in the 5K will receive a commemorative coin.
“We’re going to run through the parks and I had some custom coins made,” Pingel said. “Each participant is going to get one to remember the 20th Anniversary of 9/11.”
Registration for the 5k starts at 7:30 a.m. and at 8:02 a.m. there will be a moment of silence. The moment of silence will represent 9:02 a.m. EST from when the first tower was hit. After the moment of silence and a prayer, Pampa Independent School District Superintendent Hugh Piatt will have a message and Alexis Hancock will sing.
The 5k will eventually go by Harvester Field, where area firefighters will be doing their stair climb of 417 steps representing the first responders who perished. There will be a bell for each of the runners to ring honoring the lives lost.
The 5k ends where it started, at MK Brown, and will be wrapping up just in time for the Junk-to-Treasure marketplace to open up.
