The Pampa Lady Harvesters (22-14, 3-4) hosted Borger over the weekend in a District match-up with the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Harvesters finished the season sweep over their rival, taking care of business in three sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-10).

“We still missed 10 serves and our goal was less than two a set. But I think last time we played Borger we had 18, so we got better there,” Head Coach Kaylee Samulowitz said.

“That was one of our goals and one of our focuses, so we did better in that aspect. We started a little bit slow, but we finished on a positive note. That makes me feel better going into the rest of district.”

The Lady Harvesters got off to a hot start in the first set, with kills from freshmen Mazi Smith and Maecie Hawthorne and  an ace from junior Mikalie Floyd to give Pampa the staggering 13-3 lead. Smith and junior Ariel Lacher hit a block up front to make it 15-8, stopping a Borger run.

Pampa went on to win the first set as Floyd put the exclamation mark on the set with a pair of aces 25-17.

Borger put up a fight to start the second set but an ace from senior Haley Fossett and a kill from Smith tied the set at 9-9.  Floyd added a series of kills later in the set and Pampa took a 19-15 lead. Smith and M. Hawthorne capped off the second set and Pampa won 25-18.

“She (Maecie Hawthorne) is a young setter, which is a hard role to fill, and big shoes to fill taking over for Hallie Sieck. She gets better every game,” Samulowitz said.

“She had 25 assists today so she spread the ball out really well. One of our other freshmen, Mazi (Smith), had a crazy hitting percentage. She had 10 kills. They both played well.”

Pampa continued the domination in the third set, with junior Hallie Hawthorne hitting a pair of aces to give Pampa the 8-2 lead. Smith and Floyd led a charge where Pampa went on a run to take the 21-9 lead. The Lady Harvesters finished the sweep of Borger with the 25-10 win.

The Lady Harvesters return to action Tuesday when they travel to Hereford. Game time is at 6 p.m.

“I told our girls we have Hereford, then Perryton, so the difference in level of teams we play next is crazy,” Samulowitz said. “Our focus is to take the next two games is to build some momentum, fix what we need to fix and hopefully beat Canyon to have a tie-breaker game.”
