On June 20, 2022, our beloved brother Mack (Skip) Hiatt was laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery in Pampa, Texas, next to his parents, Mack Hiatt Jr. and Mary Hughes Hiatt.

Skip was born at Highland General Hospital in Pampa on March 27, 1955.  He spent his early childhood years in Pampa with his parents and two older sisters, Jane and Jo. Moving from Pampa when Skip was only four, the family lived in Okeene, OK, Angleton, TX, and El Paso, TX before returning to Pampa, the hometown they all loved, when Skip was nine.

After the untimely death of Skip’s father in 1968, the family moved to Austin, where Skip lived for the rest of his life. Skip was a gifted musician and composer who enjoyed an active career playing guitar and bass in Austin’s punk rock music scene.

Skip is survived by his loving sisters Jane Hiatt of Los Gatos, California and Jo Hiatt Volkert (John Volkert) of San Carlos, California.  Skip took great joy in his niece Annie Pearl (Tim Burr), and his nephews David Pearl (Emily Pearl) and Andrew Volkert (Lauren Woo). He was a proud great-uncle of their children Jake Pearl, Brody Pearl, Colby Pearl, Jack Burr, Blake Burr and Ava Woo Volkert.  He was predeceased by his parents Mack Hiatt Jr. and Mary Hughes Hiatt and his nephew Tim Volkert.

Skip is also survived by his cousins Barbara Hawkins Johns (Stephen Johns) and John Hawkins (April Hawkins) as well as by many Hughes cousins and dear friends and neighbors in Austin. The entire family, but especially Skip, was profoundly grateful for the attentive care he received in his final months from his caregivers Adrienne and Sara.

Skip walked, danced and played guitar to the beat of a different drum.  He found friendship and recognition through his musical gifts.  He was loved for his kind nature, his sharp sense of humor, and his keen musical talent. Rest in peace, dear Skip.

Donations in Skip’s memory may be made to the Pampa Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), P.O. Box 2095, Pampa, Texas 79066 or the charity of your choice.
