During the summer, many athletes involved in Pampa High School athletics will take time to hone in on their craft whether it’s on the court, the field or in the weight room.
But this week, about 150 students in the athletic program took some time to give back to the community.
“It’s important to me that our kids are trained to be servants. A couple of churches, Briarwood and First Baptist Church, found Sheryl Gray needed her house painted so today’s our prep day and we are going to finish Wednesday,” Pampa Independent School District Atheltic Director Cody Robinson said.
“We’ve worked on speed, ability, strength, discipline all summer, so now we’re training our kiddos to be team players and serve the community. That’s something you’ll never lose as you get older. You’ll lose your speed, ability and strength. But if you’re taught to give back to the community, you’ll keep that forever.”
The community service project fell right in line with the Pampa Harvesters’ PRIDE motto, where the “E” stands for the second “e” in selfless.
“Coach Rob has really embraced us being selfless so this is a project that shows us that other people matter more than you,” junior Hudson Scribner said. “It’s more important to help others.”
While it’s common for various athletic programs to hold fundraisers or projects within their own respective sport, this project included 150 students across all sports.
“It’s very different (doing it as one program) but I think it’s great for all of us to bond,” junior Braelyn Sellers said.
Junior Reese Thomas noted that it’s important for the students to give back to a community that supports them the way Pampa does.
“We’re giving back to the community because they do so much to support us,” Thomas said. “I think it’s important because it’s a good team-bonding thing. We get to know each other better.”
The students will finish their project on Wednesday.
