Putting 'Cute' in Charcuterie

At Char-Cuties Creations, you can always have it your way. Jaycee Paulson, the owner of the custom charcuterie business, creates delicious spreads from a variety of meats, cheeses, fruits, and crackers.

Before starting her business in November 2021, Paulson was her sister’s caretaker. Once she became a mother, Paulson worked as a waitress in addition to taking care of her children and sister. When Paulson met her now husband, Joseph, Paulson was able to take a step back from waitressing and focus on raising her family. It was then that she decided to open a small business creating personalized charcuterie boards.

Paulson fondly reminisced about the decision to begin her business.

“I just love food. My grandmother had a cafe in Dumas so I wanted to do something similar,” Paulson said. “I wanted to do charcuterie. I loved lunchables as a kid and thought, ‘Let’s do a grown-up version’!”

Paulson’s mother was the one who came up with the company’s name.

“I was going to call my business Sunshine Spreads. Our friend, Rae, passed away and I wanted to do something with sunshine in it,” Paulson said. “My mom suggested the name Char-Cuties. It sounded like charcuterie and it was easier to pronounce.”

Paulson’s delectable creations are customizable. Everything from the food to the decorations is designed to suit the customer’s needs.

“I want everyone to get what they ask for,” Paulson said. “I want my boards to match any event it goes to.”

Paulson shared a story of a recent order she had.

“A couple of weeks ago, someone messaged me that she was turning 26 and that she loves Taylor Swift,” Paulson said. “For her order, we made custom Taylor Swift toothpicks and made the board inspired by Taylor’s album eras.”

One of the most popular items that Char-Cuties sells is the Cutie Cups. For only $8.00, enjoy a cup of custom meat, cheese, and sweet along with a dip of your choosing. It comes with either crackers, pretzels, or bread.

“The Cutie Cups are a hit. They’re great for a quick lunch or snack,” Paulson said.

For parties or meetings, there are plenty of options to choose from. A notable spread, the Char-Groupie, serves up to ten people. The board features two types of meats, three kinds of cheeses, crisps, crackers, fresh harvest, homemade sweets, and dip.

“ I’ll be serving the Char-Groupie at The Beau-tique’s Botox Party next week,” Paulson said. “It’s going to be a big spread so that way everyone who is waiting to have their fun that day can enjoy a snack in the meantime.”

Go big or go home with Char-Cuties Whole Fam Damily. This spread can serve a gathering of up to 35 people! Choose from multiple meats, cheeses, and sweets.

“My husband came up with the name and it fits it so well; it’s a big spread of food,” Paulson said. “ I usually give people the option of setting it up on two trays or coming in myself and setting it on a whole table spread.”

When it comes to the meats that make up these delicious snacks, Paulson thanks the deli workers who have gone above and beyond to help her with her creations.

“I get my meats from the Walmart deli or Sam’s Club,” Paulson said. “The people at the deli are seriously amazing. They’re always so sweet and kind.”

Paulson expressed her thanks to those who have inspired her to achieve her dreams.

“I want to thank Laura Allen. She started her business, MotherBoard Charcuterie, and that’s truly what inspired me to do the same,” Paulson said. “Laura always does so great with hers and she is my inspiration.”

Though there are no plans as of yet, Paulson did share what her ultimate dream for her business is.

“Having a storefront is my dream. Think Subway, but for charcuterie,” Paulson said. “I want to have a place where people can come in, grab lunch, and go. I want people to have all these options to customize their snacks.”

As well, Paulson did disclose that she will be selling her Cutie Cups at Sweet T’s Boutique & Sweet Shop soon.
