The first Rolling Plains Beef Cattle Field Day has been scheduled by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Archer County.

The event will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 26 at the AgriLife Extension office for Archer County, 512 W. Cottonwood, Archer City. RSVPs are requested to the AgriLife Extension office at 940-574-4914 by March 20.

The program is free due to the sponsorship of Cross Timbers Ag and Turner Seed. Meals are being sponsored by Tucker Ag Products and the Archer County Soil and Water Conservation District. The Spur Hotel, 940-574-2501, has been designated as the host hotel for those traveling from out of the county.

“We wanted to update our Rolling Plains cattle producers of things happening in the industry today,” said Joshua Smartt, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent for Archer County. “I am hoping to attract producers from all areas of the state, because this program is the day before the Texas Cattle Raisers Association meeting in Fort Worth.”

Smartt said the first half of the day will be spent inside and the afternoon portion will be outside for demonstrations.

“We will talk marketing, cow-calf management, herd health, toxic plant issues like threadleaf groundsel and rangeland management,” he said.

Speakers will include Jason Johnson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist, Stephenville; James Jackson, AgriLife Extension range specialist, Stephenville; and Keelan Lewis, DVM, Salt Creek Vet Hospital, Olney; and Bruce Carpenter, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Ft. Stockton.
