Moms4Tom will be hosting the second annual Turkey Trot in Memory of Thomas Brown on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. at the Canadian River Wagon Bridge in Canadian.
The Turkey Trot is a 5k Walk/Run crossing the Canadian River Wagon Bridge that serves as a fundraiser for the Thomas Brown Memorial Scholarship that will be awarded to students in the Texas Panhandle.
“The Turkey Trot was started as a fundraiser for Thomas’s Scholarship,” said Penny Meek, Thomas Brown’s mother.
“We decided to do it (Turkey Trot) out at the Canadian River Bridge last year. We called it a 5k, but we really didn’t run,” Penny laughed. “We just walked across the bridge and back.”
“We didn’t know if we were going to do it this year because everything was so controversial (in Canadian). So it’s kind of last minute. We ended up deciding we were going to do it, even if just ten people show up,” said Penny.
All proceeds go to the Thomas Brown Memorial Scholarship, which is being awarded to other Texas Panhandle high school seniors in addition to Canadian High School seniors this year.
“The first two years that we’ve done it, we have only offered it to Canadian High School students, simply because that’s about all the money that we could distribute,” said Penny. “It has grown since then. It’s our way to give back to other people in the Panhandle for their generosity and their kindness and thier prayers. So we just wanted to extend it to other people in the Panhandle area.”
Penny spoke about the support she has received from the citizens of Pampa over the years.
“Pampa has been very supportive. I don’t hardly ever come to Pampa without having people stop me to talk to me. I’ve even had people buy my meals,” said Penny.
T-shirts are available to order, even if you missed the pre-order deadline to have your shirt in time for the Turkey Trot. They are orange in color and are available in both adult and youth sizes.
