Gloria Swires, 81, of Pampa, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2024 with her family by her side.
Services will be 10:00 AM Monday April 1, 2024 at Mary Ellen & Harvester Church of Christ with Keith Feerer, pastor of Logan Church of Christ, officiating.
Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, March 31, 2024 from 3:00-4:30 PM.
Gloria was born September 30, 1942 in Wheeler to Lem and Agnes Gaines.
She graduated from Wheeler High School in 1961.
On December 25, 1960, she married the love of her life, David Swires. They were married for 58 years before he passed away on February 11, 2018.
In 1966, they moved to Pampa and that is where they made their home.
Gloria worked for Pampa Independent School District in the Special Education department at Austin Elementary School for 22 years, and Lamar Elementary School for several years before she retired.
She was a longtime member of Mary Ellen & Harvester Church of Christ. Gloria loved to share the gospel as she volunteered with Gray County Women’s Jail Ministry, Ruff Jordan Prison Ministry, and on a mission trip to Trinidad.
She was involved with Gray County Association for the Intellectually Disabled, serving as Past President.
She also was very involved with the Special Olympics, where she coached and helped wherever she was needed. Gloria was also involved with GCTR for several years.
Her hobbies included sewing, eating out, gambling, and following Randy around to all of his events and parades.
Gloria will be missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ricky Swires; sisters, Violet Knight, Martha Hogan, Rebeca Wallace; brothers, Glen Gaines and Leonard Gaines; sisters-in-law, Betty Gaines and Sandy Gaines; and a brother-in-law, Eton Wallace.
Survivors include her son, Randy Swires of the home; two sisters, Loria Tennison and husband Mike of Pampa and Judy Chandler and husband Terry of Amarillo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
