Mavis Ellen Green

Mavis Ellen Green, a resident of Ussery Roan Texas State Veterans Retirement Home in Amarillo, passed from this life on April 2, 2024, at the age of 96. No service is planned.

Mavis was born in Paducah, Texas to James Henry Whisenhunt and Ethel Staton Whisenhunt on March 29, 1928, the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Sudan High School, and in 1946 met her future husband, Alfred Nelson Green, Jr. (Al Green) and in 1947 they married in Amarillo. Mavis and Al later moved to Pampa, Texas, where they raised five children. Mavis was very active in school and church activities in Pampa, receiving lifetime membership in PTA and preparing the weekly bulletin for Fellowship Baptist Church.

After retirement Mavis and Al moved back to Al’s home town of Wildorado, Texas, in 1988 initially living next door to Al’s widowed mother and continuing to live in Wildorado until they moved to Ussery Roan Texas State Veterans Retirement Home in Amarillo in 2019. While in Wildorado Mavis was active in the Senior Citizens Association and the Women’s Club and also prepared the weekly bulletin for Palo Duro Baptist Church. Mavis made many friends during her lifetime and was well known for her kindness and pleasant personality.

Mavis is survived by her daughter Gail G. Lowe and husband Melvin of Amarillo, sons Alfred Nelson (Buzzy) Green and wife Sue of Gilmer, Texas, Brad Green of Bremerton, Washington, Carey Neal Green and wife Mindi of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and son-in-law Larry Goree of Boswell, Oklahoma. Also surviving her are fifteen grandchildren, Teri Denton, Kasi Baklashev, Kurt Beck, Jeremy Green, Nathan Green, Brandy Friesenborg, D.J. Loven, Nick Loven, Kristen Wimmer, Daniel Green, Aaron Green, Melinda De Liso, Madeline Green, Caleb Green and Faith Green, nineteen great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Al Green, her husband of 73 years, her daughter Pamela Elaine Goree, parents Henry and Ethel Whisenhunt, sister Nina Beatrice Atkins, brothers James Marion (Son) Whisenhunt, Clib Thomas (Jake) Whisenhunt, Grover Edgar Whisenhunt, John Henry Whisenhunt and Arthur Lee (Art) Whisenhunt.
