Miami’s annual Cow Calling is back for its 74th year. The cow calling is just as it sounds, a weekend of events that are based around cow calling. Starting this Friday, June 2nd the events will kick off with a poker tournament at 7 pm, with food trucks arriving at 5 pm. The poker tournament is a $100 buy-in, with a concert at the same time. Velvet Funk Band will perform at the Project Center, 1001 Highway 60, thanks to the Miami Chamber of Commerce. The three-day event kicks off Friday, with Saturday being the busiest day.

“We have a lot happening Saturday,” Lesley Casper said. “Saturday is the day with the cow calling, but so much else. This has been an annual tradition that the people of Miami loved so we’ve kept it going year after year.”

Starting at 8:30 is the 5K/Family Fun Run, followed by the parade at 10 am. While the parade is running its course, Fuegos food truck will be set up at 9 am selling breakfast burritos, with Sweet Sips in from Amarillo to serve drinks on Main Street. Followed by the volleyball tournament at 11, with a barbecue dinner starting at noon for $15 a plate.

“The cow calling will start at 1 in the afternoon,” Casper said. “We will have 36 vendors present, with loads of kids events in the park as well.”

The kid’s event in the park will feature bounce houses, obstacle courses, a kids’ train for $10 a ride, a water slide for a small fee of $3 that allow access for the whole day, and a dunking booth. All-day access passes are available for purchase for children interested in doing all events.

The competition for the cow calling, ages from three to 80, is hosted in the park, with judges placing the top three contestants.

“We have judges present,” Casper said. “It’s based on who can call the cow the best. We give out cash prizes to the 1st through 3rd winners.”

The Miami High School junior class will serve street tacos beginning at 6 pm, with a free concert from Seth Ward thanks to the Miami/Roberts County Fire Department.

“We hope to see everyone come out to this,” Casper said. “Just bring the family out and enjoy everything we have going on for our annual event.”
