Four killed, including two children, killed in crash Friday

A Clayton man, a Dumas woman and two children were killed in a two-vehicle crash east of Hartley on Friday evening.

At about 6:10 p.m., a 2019 Honda HRV, driven by Maurice Jefferson, 33, Dumas, was driving west on U.S. Highway 87 while a 2013 Chevy Tahoe, driven by Eugene Trujillo, 59, Clayton, New Mexico, was driving east on U.S. 87.

For unknown reasons, Jefferson veered into the eastbound lane of travel in the path of the Tahoe. Trujillo attempted to avoid the collision by steering the vehicle left. Jefferson attempted to avoid the collision by steering back into the westbound lane, resulting in the head-on collision.

Jefferson and two juveniles (11 and six years old) were pronounced deceased on the scene by Hartley County Judge Ronnie Gordon.

Trujillo’s passenger, Diana Segura, 62, Clayton, N.M., was prounced deceased on the scene by Gordon.

Jefferson’s passenger, Abbie Serbin, 32, Dumas, was transported to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with serious injuries.

All parties were wearing their seatbelts.

One killed in Hutchinson County

A Spearman man was killed in a single-vehicle crash north of Stinnett in Hutchinson County on Saturday morning.

At about 6:45 a.m. Saturday, Jose Lino-Ponce, 35, Spearman, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe west on Farm-to-Market 281 when the driver failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway.

Lino-Ponce abruptly swerved to the left and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to travel in a side-skid across the road and into the south ditch where it rolled over multiple times.

The unsecured driver was ejected while the vehicle came to a rest upright facing north on the south side of the road.

Lino-Ponce was pronounced deceased on the scene by Hutchinson County Justice of the Peace, Leslie Ford.
