Gary J. Hyatt, 73, of Amarillo died Friday, December 23, 2022

The memorial service will be at 10:00 am, Friday, January 6, 2023, at Trinity Baptist Church with former pastor, John Redfearn and Brad Jones officiating.

Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home 4100 S Georgia St.

Gary was born March 10, 1949, in Pampa, Texas to Jake and Janice Hyatt. He graduated from Pampa High School in 1967, where he was the varsity quarterback and played catcher for the baseball team. He graduated from West Texas State University in 1973 where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. On June 7, 1974, Gary married the love of his life, Kathy King in the Amarillo Botanical Gardens. The family grew with the addition of their three children, Katie, Cody, and Kacie.

Gary enjoyed a 30-year career in the insurance business retiring in 2015. After he retired, Gary continued to spend his time volunteering and giving back to the community.

He loved life. He was passionate in everything he did, and helping others just came naturally. From an early age, he was drawn to people and always had a generous heart. While at WT, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta and was elected to the Inter-fraternity Council. He was very involved in Trinity Baptist Church, active in Bible Fellowship Study, Men’s Prayer Breakfast, and the Security Team. He later joined the WT Lady Buff Volleyball Booster Club and he and his wife were inducted into the WT Hall of Legends. To say that he loved WT would be an understatement. The only thing Gary loved more than helping people and WT, was his family. He treasured the time spent with them in their favorite vacation destinations including, Destin, Florida, and Wolf Creek Ski Resort, and loved captaining the pontoon boat across many lakes. There was nothing he enjoyed more than slinging his grandkids around on the tube. He became a second dad to many Marines, volleyball players, and friends alike.

He was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Gary is survived by his wife, Kathy; two daughters, Katie Hoyler and husband Alex; Kacie Holland and husband Jeff; son Cody Hyatt and wife Erin; a sister, Sherry Lynn Gray and husband Lee; Seven Grandchildren, Caroline Hoyler, Madelyn Hyatt, Noah Holland, Parker Hyatt, Logan Hoyler, Brady Holland, Hunter Hyatt; a nephew, Ryan King, and wife Dawn and kids; multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins; and close family friend, Darlene Martin.

The family asks that any donations be made to the “Buffalo Club-Lady Buff Volleyball Scholarship”.
