Johnnie Max Carpenter, 79, of McLean, Texas, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Private family graveside services will be held in Hillcrest Cemetery in McLean.

Johnnie was born on July 31, 1947, in Pampa, Texas, to Milton Fletcher and Anna Maude (Cash) Carpenter. On September 10, 1987, he married Mary Ann Carter in Pampa. Shortly after their marriage, the couple made their home in McLean, where they spent most of their lives together.

Johnnie was a lifelong rancher and took great pride in the life he built through hard work, family, and a love of the outdoors. He enjoyed playing golf, fly fishing, bow hunting, and shooting. He was especially talented at making his own arrows, a reflection of the time and care he put into the things he loved.

Above all, Johnnie cherished his family. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandchildren and making memories with them in the outdoors. His love for his family and the time he spent with them will be deeply remembered by all who knew him. He was also a devoted member of the McLean Church of Christ.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents, Milton Fletcher and Anna Maude Carpenter; his daughter, Canda Lee Henry; his brother, Jack Carpenter; and his sister, Effie Lou Everett.

He is survived by his loving wife who spent 39 wonderful years together, Mary Ann Carpenter of McLean; his son, John Cash Carpenter of Houston; stepson, Elson Rice of Amarillo; stepdaughters, Jem Ann Freeman and fiancé Brian of Midland, and Shandee Tolleson and husband David of McLean; son-in-law, Steve Henry of Detroit, TX; 11 grandchildren, Jacob, DaShae, Kearston, Katelyn, Jaden, Hadley, Gage, Dylan, Devin, Garrett, and Samantha; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Johnnie will be remembered for his love of ranching, his passion for the outdoors, and, most of all, his devotion to his family. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be treasured by those who loved him.

Memorial donations may be made to High Plains Children’s Home, PO Box 7448, Amarillo, TX 79114 in Johnnie’s memory.
