The Harvesters traveled to Lubbock on Saturday to compete in what many consider the state preview meet. With some of the top competition in the state gathered in one place, Pampa’s runners delivered several strong performances as the season continues to move toward the postseason.

The Pampa High School boys highlighted the day with a pair of medal finishes. Senior Ryan Resendiz placed 15th overall, while junior Jesus Montano finished 22nd to give the Harvesters two runners among the meet’s top finishers.

Freshman Dimarrio Ortega also turned in one of the team’s top performances, setting a new personal record for the second time this season. Ortega finished in 19:37, breaking the 20-minute mark.

Head Coach Otis Chunn said the meet gave the Harvesters an opportunity to see how they matched up against some of the best competition they could face later in the season.

“The team ran exceptionally well Saturday and understands the work ahead as we move forward in the season,” Chunn said.

On the girls side, the Lady Harvesters competed in a crowded and competitive field. Junior Perla Hernandez led the group with a 67th-place finish, while freshman Alexis Valles continued her improvement by setting a new PR with a time of 16:29.

The junior varsity boys also showed progress. Freshmen Benson Owens and Clark Campbell both reached the 20-minute mark.

The JV race also gave Pampa a look at district rival Perryton. Perryton placed five runners ahead of the Harvesters, but only a few seconds separated Pampa from the front of the pack, leaving plenty of opportunity for movement as the district meet approaches.

Chunn said the performances in Lubbock were another positive step for a team that has continued to improve throughout the season.

“It has been a great season so far, and the Harvesters are ready to take the next step,” Chunn said. “Go Harvesters!”

The Harvesters will now turn their attention to the District 4-A meet in Canyon on October 16. The first race is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
