Reba Hanks, 89, of Mountain Spring, Texas, and formerly of Pampa, passed away on May 30, 2023 in Gainesville, Texas.
Graveside services celebrating the life of Reba Hanks will be 11:00 AM, Friday, June 2, 2023 at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Norman Rushing, pastor of Central Baptist Church, officiating. Burial and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.
Reba was born on November 29, 1933 in Minco, OK to Speed Austin and Katie Barnard. She moved to Pampa with her family as a teenager and graduated from Pampa High School in 1952. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Panhandle State University, Goodwell, OK in 1960. She then started her long teaching career that spanned over 32 years at the Pampa Independent School District. Reba later earned her master’s degree at West Texas State University.
She married Sam Hanks on June 29, 1963 in Panhandle and Sam preceded her in death on August 9, 2005. Reba was a member of Central Baptist Church. She moved to Mountain Spring, TX in 2007. Reba deeply loved her family and friends, teaching, quilting and rocking babies.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five brothers, Harold Lee Barnard, Desmond Barnard, S. A. Barnard, J. D. Barnard and JE Barnard; 2 sisters, Mozell Deihl, and Virgie Buford; and a stepson, Jim Hanks.
Survivors include her son, Dempsey Atwood and wife Claudette of Duncan OK; daughter, Stephanie Cross and husband Dale of Mountain Springs TX; a granddaughter, Ashley McCorkle, husband Kacy; and multiple great-grandchildren all of Mountain Springs, TX; stepson, Melford Hanks; and a stepdaughter, Lorraine Smith, both of Pampa; and six step-greatgrandchildren.
