Sue Smith, 91, of Skellytown, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 in Pampa.

Services will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at the First Baptist Church in Skellytown with Rev. Carter Pirtle, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Monday, May 13, 2024.

Sue was born on September 18, 1932 in Pampa to Walter and Linnie Dallison Shair. She attended school in Spring Creek and Borger. Sue graduated from Borger High School in 1951. After graduating, Sue attended nursing school at the Methodist hospital in Dallas. In 1953, Sue moved to Friona where she worked at the Parmer County Community Hospital. She met Shirley Smith after moving to Friona and the two were married on January 2, 1954.

Sue continued her nursing career at Parmer County Community Hospital where she worked as a staff nurse, a nurse anesthetist, and the director of nursing. She retired in 2000 after a 47-year long career in nursing. Shortly after retiring, Sue and Shirley moved to Skellytown to be closer to family. Sue later started working at the Skellytown post office and was employed there until 2020. Sue was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Skellytown.

She enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, reading, cuddling her cats, gardening, canning, and going camping in the mountains. Sue loved sharing cookies with her great-grandchildren, who she called her “best friends.” Sue also enjoyed going to all her grandchildren’s school functions and sporting events.

Sue was a youth group leader and children’s Sunday school teacher at the First United Methodist Church in Friona and an adult Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church in Skellytown. She also volunteered at the White Deer-Skellytown Lighthouse Food Pantry and delivered meals with the Senior Citizens Center in Skellytown. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society for several years.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Linnie Shair; her husband, Shirley Smith; her sister, Donna Moreland; and her brother-in-law, Bill Moreland.

She is survived by her three children, Shirley Lynn Brazeal of Friona, Tammy Kay Paris and husband Glen of Fritch, and Monte Wade Smith and partner Stormie Cawyer; six grandchildren, Shelley Allen and husband John of Lubbock, Shannon Hurst and husband Clint of Friona, Chance Paris of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Chase Paris and wife Shelli of Fritch, Clay Paris and wife Bailey of Leila Lake, Katrina Smith and Dusty Romines of Pampa, Cason Smith of Houston, Keevin Smith of Oklahoma, and Misty Barrow of Pampa; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and one on the way; and several nieces and nephews.
