PAWS October Newsletter

PAWS was invited to participate in the Rust & Rodz event at Recreation Park on October 4th. We took 17 dogs to this event. The animals were wonderful and they enjoyed getting out of the shelter for a few hours. It is so sweet when someone stops to talk to a dog and he puts his paw up on the side of the kennel as if to say “See me, please pet me.” We had no adoptions, but it was good exposure and we hope people realize we have some wonderful dogs at the shelter that desperately need a home.

September was another slow month with 17 adoptions for the month. We are over-run with puppies. We are overrun with animals of all ages. We have been spaying and neutering animals by the hundreds over the years and we still have so many animals that we cannot find homes for. When we get discouraged, something happens to lift our spirits. Two beautiful young ladies named Harley and Paisley set up a Lemonade Stand to earn money for the animals at PAWS. They brought their earnings to the shelter and gave them to Faustina. Thank you, Harley and Paisley for your hard work and your kind hearts.

The nights are getting colder and Fall is officially here. When we were at our adoption event yesterday, it was a warm day but the wind was blowing. I noticed some of our smaller dogs shivering. Be aware of the weather. If you are cold, so is your pet. The idea that “they are used to it” or “they are made for it” is not true and they all need a safe, warm place to sleep. Use straw for insulation. It will keep them warm and dry. Blankets or any bedding made of cloth can get wet then freeze to your pet’s body, freezing them to death.

The shelter is in need of large bath towels, canned dog food with gravy, kitten pate, paper towels, dryer sheets, and as always, money is needed for medical expenses.
