After a little over 20 years since its last renovation, the historic Pioneer Cottage is now undergoing a makeover with new siding covering the outside walls, a little landscaping, and all that’s left now is a shiny coat of paint as soon as the unpredictable panhandle weather permits.
The Cottage is fully owned by the City of Pampa, but along with the help of the Texas Historical Commission, the White Deer Land Museum Foundation, and the Jordan Unit, the Cottage has remained a beautiful remnant of Pampa’s rich history.
Inmates from the Jordan Unit outside of Pampa have been hard at work with the new construction, just as they did for its last renovation in 2003. The last thing to do is to put a fresh coat of paint on it that will match the light blue it has been for many years, although the original color of the cottage remains unknown, giving the quaint dwelling an air of historical mystery.
The cottage was built in 1903 by settlers Wiley Vincent and his wife Katie one year after Gray County was organized. In 1963, it was given to the Pampa Genealogical and Historical Society as a museum and had been restored to its original appearance.
Stop by the corner of East Atchison and Cuyler Street to take a look at this neat little timecapsule and stop in at the White Deer Land Museum to learn more about Pampa’s other hidden gems and fascinating history!
