Southside Senior Citizens Center provides meals over the weekend

While Meals on Wheels has been a staple in the community providing meals for the home-bound and elderly on weekdays, Southside Senior Citizens Center, located 438 W. Crawford, has worked to fill in the gap on Saturdays for more than 40 years.

“We do a meal every Saturday,” Bea Taylor, executive director of Southside Senior Citizens Center said. “We have nine volunteers with four deliverers.”

The Center used to do meals during the week, but hope to secure more financing.

Starting Monday, after having their floor repaired from recent storms, Southside Senior Citizens Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for fellowship.

“We weren’t that open before the vaccine was available,” Taylor said. “We had some people come in but they had to have their mask on.”

Southside Senior Citizen Center provides a place for seniors to hang out and enjoy fellowship with one another.

“Most of the time they just sit around and drink coffee,” Taylor said. “Some of them shoot pool and watch TV. We have cards and dominoes but some of the ones that did that have gone on.”
