White Deer Land Museum Summer Camp Day 2: Tearin’ It Up with Grant Johnson

Posted

Day 2 of the White Deer Land Museum Summer Camp is now in the books, and these campers got to spend some time at the museum and put their creative skills to the test.

Pampa renowned artist (and historian) Grant Johnson provided insight on his creative process, inspiration, and other famous artists, instructing the kiddos to let their imaginations flow freely through their very own collage art.

With plenty of scrap paper from old maps, brochures, and other resources for the kids to work with, the exhibit hall of the museum became a paper shredding hub.

“They can make anything they want,” Grant said. “We talked a little bit about collage and Picasso who made the collage an acceptable work of art, and I showed them some examples. So they are coming up with an idea in their head of a scene or an item that they want to portray, and they’re just tearing up paper to make a collage, which means ‘to stick together.’ I told them to use paper like paint. If they need red, to look for red paper, or if it’s blue, look for blue paper-the paper is their palette to find their paint. And what’s more fun than tearing up paper!”

And fun they certainly had. From oceans with fish to flowers and animals, these mini-Picassos had a blast making their own works of art. The clean up phase? Maybe not so much!
