DUMAS- The Pampa Harvesters (0-7, 0-3) traveled to Dumas (3-5, 2-1) on Friday night where they took on the Demons to continue District 2-4A action.
The Harvesters were hamstrung by penalties, both in a promising opening drive and in the second half as the miscues spelled disaster and contributed to the 34-3 loss.
The Harvesters found themselves in a 7-0 hole to start their first drive, as they set up shop at the six-yard line for Pampa. The drive started with running backs Sophomore Colton Rose and Junior Aiden Hammond trading carries to move the chains. On the fourth play of the drive, Junior Quarterback Jeryn Owens found Sophomore Paxton Daniels on the right sideline wide open for a 76-yard catch and run. The Dumas defense held Pampa to a field goal to punctuate the drive, but the Harvesters cut into the lead 7-3 after the knock by Junior Brayan Montelongo with 4:46 left in the opening quarter.
Dumas found the endzone on the ensuing drive after a long run by their quarterback Colton Mills, and Dumas took the 14-3 lead. Mills went over 8,000 yards for his career on the drive.
The following Pampa drive started at the Harvester 29-yard line. The drive was highlighted by a 19-yard fake punt run by Hammond. But the Harvesters were unable to capitalize on the deception and turned it over on downs after an unsuccessful second fake punt.
The Demons extended their lead to 21-3 with 10:31 left in the half after the failed fake punt.
The Harvesters went back to Rose and Hammond with the tandem trading carries to get Pampa down to about midfield at the two-minute warning. Hammond, Rose and Owens got Pampa to the Dumas 28-yard line in the waning moments of the half until an untimely interception all but ended the half and the teams went into the locker room with Dumas leading 21-3.
The Harvesters punted on their first drive of the second half, which Dumas turned into a touchdown drive.
Now trailing 28-3, the Harvester offense started the drive with a 14-yard catch by Daniels on a slant pass to move the sticks. A long pass-and-catch from Owens to Thomas was called back due to a holding penalty. After a pass to sophomore Cruise Godino, Owens had a long run that was also called back. The frustrating drive resulted in a punt with 10:23 left to play.
Dumas rumbled into the end zone on their ensuing drive to extend their lead to 34-3 with 4:52 left to play.
The game ended with the Harvesters falling to Dumas 34-3.
The Harvesters return to action on Friday for Senior Night in their final home game of the season when they host Canyon. Game time is at 7 p.m. but get there early so you can recognize the seniors for their contributions to the Pampa Harvester Athletic Program.
