The Pampa Hustlin’ Harvesters (1-1) earned their first win of the season on Friday evening when they knocked off the Caprock Longhorns for the 47-36 victory.
“It was big for us to bounce back after a tough loss on Tuesday,” Head Coach Braydon Barker said. “I was proud of the fight the kids showed. Especially being short handed with three guys out against Caprock.”
The Hustlin’ Harvesters were led in scoring by senior Julian Alonzo, who had 15 points, and went 3-8 in free throws.
“Julian is one of our seniors and has been on varsity since he was a freshman,” Barker said. “He had a rough game against Lubbock Cooper, but he bounced back and had a big game against Caprock. He is great in transition and our leading rebounder, so we are expecting a big year from Julian this year.”
Julian’s brother Jose, had 11 points, had a three-pointer and was 2-4 in free throws. The two will create a brotherly tandem for the Harvesters this season.
“It is a neat deal to be able to coach 2 brothers on the same team,” Barker said. “They are both extremely competitive, but in their own ways.”
Along with the Alonzo brothers, junior Bryce Lynn had seven points and was 1-3 from the stripe; junior Trill Young had six points and sank both of his free throws; junior Conner Hall had three points and was 1-3 in free throws; junior Tristan Bagwell had three points and went 1-1 in free throws and junior Parker Webb sank both of his free throws. As a team, the Harvesters shot 11-20 in free throws.
The Harvesters return to action Tuesday when they travel to Canadian for their first road game of the season. Game time is about 6 p.m.
“Canadian will be missing several players since they are still in football, but they have several varsity players that did not play football,” Barker said. “They are always a tough team that will play good man-to-man defense. It will be a good test for us on the road early in the year.”
