Mary Poppins visits Lovett Memorial Library

Posted

Mary Poppins paid a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious visit to the library on Monday morning to read stories, sing and teach children about the women’s suffrage movement. This concluded the Library’s Summer Reading program for the year 2023.

Stephanie Clinton (Mary Poppins) was in full character as she read and sang to the children in a faux british accent.

Though not a Pampa native, Stephanie graduated high school here in Pampa. She currently resides in Norman, OK.

“My first Mary Poppins party was in 2018. A friend of mine asked me if she bought me the costume if I would appear at her daughter’s birthday party? I said yes, and I decided since I had the costume that I would continue to make appearances.”

She operates by word-of-mouth and doesn’t have a social media page or official business for her Mary Poppins appearances.

“If somebody’s mom asks me to do their little girl’s birthday party, I’ll do a what I call magical tea parties. I’m also a member of Assistance Leauge, it’s a philanthropic group, we do literacy events at my local library in Norman.”

The books Clinton chose to read were; She Persisted, Last Stop on Market Street and In My Heart. The songs she sang included Sister Suffragette, Feed the Birds and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

After a visit with Mary Poppins, the children were thanked for their reading efforts over the summer  with logs totaling over 2,400 books read between 43 children in the months of June and July. A total of 225 children registered for the summer.

The sponsors and volunteers were thanked for their time and involvement, wich included Pampa Friends of the Library, Pampa H20, Wonderland Park, The Sodpoodles, The Pampa High School Art Department and several individuals.
