Well-known Texas-based musicians, Mike Borger and John Dennis Garvey, will be performing at the Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center on December 1st at 6:00 pm. Borger and Garvey are founders of the iconic band, The Prairie Dogs, a group of five musicians most known for their uniquely original songs. Borger, a Pampa local for the past seven years, was born and raised in Amarillo and is an established musician and songwriter. Before the music group was created, Borger and his current band mates were already playing music together. The group worked incredibly well with each other and formed the The Prairie Dogs, in 1989.

Borger reflected upon the band’s progress over the years.

“We play original music. We have done some covers, but our genre is Americana,” Borger said. “We’ve played at a lot of festivals. We’ve performed at the Starlight Festival for several years.”

As for his upcoming performance, Borger and his long-time friend, Garvey, will be playing their original Americana-themed songs. Garvey, a terrific songwriter and musician, will be showing off his mandolin skills on Thursday night.

“We’ve known each other since junior high. We’ve been playing music together throughout the years,” Borger said. “We’ve written many songs together.”

The Prairie Dogs have released four albums with their most recent one having been released in 2016. Most of the original songs the band has made were written by Borger, Garvey, or a combination of the two.

As for their upcoming performance together, Borger is highly looking forward to show the audience the new music that he and Garvey have made.

“We played at the Woody Guthrie Center around three years ago, since then we have written new songs,” Borger said. “Although it is a performance, it’ll feel just like a concert.”
