The Pampa Harvesters (0-4, 2-7) traveled again to Happy State Bank Stadium last night to face the Randall Raiders (3-1, 8-1). For just the second time this season, it was more like fall rather than summer with temperatures in the 60s at kickoff, dropping to the 50s by the end of the game. There was a little wind as well with gusts over 20 mph at the start but they calmed during the game. The clouds rolled in before kickoff to keep the sun away. It was a race against the rain, with both sides hoping it would hold off until after the game and everyone got home. However, the rain held off until early Saturday morning.
Pampa won the toss and deferred to the second half. The Harvesters would kick toward the north endzone. The Raiders took the opening kickoff and had a methodical drive to go down the field and score the opening touchdown of the game. The drive was 14 plays, 77 yards, 6:57. Randall took a 7-0 lead after the extra point was good.
The first Pampa drive had a little success when Sophomore Quarterback Gage Gamblin found Junior Tight End Clayton Ward for a six-yard pass play before they were forced to punt after a three-and-out.
Randall’s next drive went 8 plays, 59 yards, 2:53 before they found the endzone again to take a 13-0 lead late in the first quarter. The two-point conversion was snuffed out by the Harvesters and it was 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Pampa found some success on their next drive with a 22-yard pass from Gamblin to Senior Wide Receiver Bryce Lynn to start the drive. Junior Running Back Max Neff had back-to-back runs after that for another first down. Then, Gamblin found Ward again for another eight-yard pass play. Neff had another seven-yard run before a Pampa timeout. After the timeout, Gamblin had a pass intercepted in the endzone and it was returned to the 43-yard line for good field position for the Raiders.
After the interception, Randall only took one play to go 57 yards for their third touchdown of the game and to take a 20-0 lead in the game with 8:04 to play in the first half.
Neff began the next drive with a 10-yard gain and a first down. Two plays later, Gamblin found Junior Wide Receiver Reece Waldrip for an 11-yard gain and another first down. There was another short pass for two-yards to Junior Wide Receiver Jose Alonzo before the Harvesters were forced to punt again.
Randall’s next drive went 11 plays, 62 yards, 3:52 and ended with a 33-yard field goal which was good to make the score 23-0 Raiders.
It looked as if the Harvesters might get something going before the half when Gamblin found Lynn for a short pass across the middle before they were forced to punt again shortly before halftime.
Pampa got the ball to start the second half and aside from a Gamblin pass to Junior Tight End Parker Webb for seven yards there was not much action and they were forced to punt again.
Randall went 3 plays, 46 yards, 1:50 before scoring again to make the score 30-0 with 8:36 to play in the third quarter.
Neff began the next drive with a 15-yard run for a first down. He ran for another six yards a few plays later. Then, Gamblin found Ward for two more yards. On fourth down the Harvesters faked the punt with Senior Running Back Christian Davalos picking up the first down on a 10-yard run. Another fourth down and short came up for the Harvesters. Neff bowed his neck and bullied some Raiders to make his way five yards for another fourth down conversion. Unfortunately for Pampa, the third fourth down of the drive was unsuccessful, despite a four yard pass from Gamblin to Lynn. Randall took over at their own 37-yard line. The Raiders did not do anything with their next drive and Pampa took over with 1:46 to play in the third quarter.
Pampa also was able to get anything going after another three-and-out. Randall only needed one play this time as the pop pass went for 65 yards and another score with two seconds left in the third quarter. The Raiders led in the game 37-0 after three complete.
Both teams traded punts after some time eating drives to give Pampa the ball again with 6:36 to play in the game.
It was a heavy dose of Davalos on the final drive for Pampa as he toted the rock nine times on the drive. The big play of the drive was Gamblin finding Junior Wide Receiver Jose Alonzo for 17 yards and a first down. Pampa’s drive fell short of the endzone and the final score was Randall 37, Pampa 0.
