Pampa local Jonie Griffith opened the doors to Southern Sass Salon at 314 N. Ballard in Sept. 2019.
Griffith says that she only had to do minor work on the building to get it ready for clients.
“I had to put in my own shampoo bowls, I had to re-do part of the floor, but nothing major,” she said.
The salon is currently home to four stylists including Griffith; Nancy Finney, Consuelo Ortega and Anabelle Gonzales.
Between the four stylists, services offered include men’s, women’s and children’s haircuts as well as perms, hair color, waxing and even pedicures.
“We do haircuts, perms, hair color and things like that,” said Griffith. She says that all the stylists can offer the same range of services for their clients, although there are certain services that one stylist may prefer doing over the other.
“I like haircuts and perms mainly- hair color I do good at too, but it’s not my overall favorite,” Griffith said of her own preferences. She says that the other stylists have their own preferences as well, but are capable of performing any of the services they list.
“They are all hard workers and they are very creative,” Griffith said.
The salon was mandated to close by the State due to COVID-19 concerns.
“We were closed about six to eight weeks. We re-opened three weeks ago,” Griffith said.
Upon re-opening, Griffith says that she and the other stylists have had to adapt their practices to maintain social distancing and safety guidelines.
“We have to wear masks. We can only have one client per stylist [in the salon] at once and we have to stay six feet apart. We are asking that our customers wear a mask, but we don’t make them,” Griffith said.
Despite having to take extra precaution, Griffith is happy to be able to open her doors to the clientele she considers family. She says the best part of owning a business in Pampa is getting to know the people.
“It’s more than just a business,” Griffith said.
“You build a relationship with them (clients). They become almost like family,”
