Adelaide Sherwood Skelly Colwell, 84, of Belton, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2020, surrounded by family at Baylor Scott and White Hospital. 

Memorial service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel in Pampa. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. 

Adelaide was born December 22, 1935 in Pampa. She attended Pampa schools, graduating from Pampa High School in 1954. In her youth, she was very involved in choral activities at Pampa High School and in Girl Scouts. She received her bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College in Pennsylvania in 1958. Upon graduation, she returned to Pampa to teach at Horace Mann Elementary School for two years while her husband was in military service. She spent the rest of her life in a career as loving, wife, mother and grandmother. 

She belonged to the Daughters of the Revolution, Friends of The Public Library in Pampa, Community Concerts in Pampa, supported the Temple Symphony Orchestra, and founded the Colwell Family Fine Arts Scholarship through the Temple College Foundation. 

Adelaide was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Pampa and later First Presbyterian Church in Belton.

She lived in Pampa from her birth until 2000 and resided in Belton for the past twenty years.

Adelaide was proceeded in death by her parents, Lillian Payrow Skelly and John Scott Skelly, Jr., her brother John Scott Skelly, III and her beloved husband Walter Lee Colwell. 

She is survived by her son, Brent Thompson Colwell and wife Carol Ann Colwell of Belton; daughter, Anne Marie Colwell Clemons and husband Ron Clemons of Belton; granddaughters, Shelby Clemons Parker, Rachel Clemons and Sarah Grace Clemons; her sisters, Martha Crowley, Rebecca Edgren, Natalie Stephenson, Prudence Traut, Phoebe Duggan and Gretchen Zimmer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Colwell Family Fine Arts Scholarship through the Temple College Foundation, 2600 South 1st Street, Temple, Texas 76504; or the favorite fine arts charity of your choice.
