Teddy Joe “Ted” Atwood, Sr., 95 of Pampa passed away into the arms of Jesus on September 26, 2023, in Pampa.
Services will be 10:00 AM, Monday, October 2, 2023, at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Byron Williamson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.
Ted will be available for viewing from 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Saturday and 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Sunday.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.
Ted, the son of Thomas Manuel and Florence Armenda Atwood, was born August 21, 1928, at home on the Britt Ranch, outside of Wheeler. He attended the Rock School on the Britt Ranch. Growing up on the Ranch, Ted and his brothers Charles Thomas “Dick”, Walter J. “Sox” and Jack Wallis and his sister Wilma Louise “Cricket” Durham helped his parents do ranch work and pick cotton.
Ted was a devoted husband to his wife LaDell. They were married August 23, 1947, in Wheeler. Ted and LaDell celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in 2018. He often said there was no one ever like her and after her death, he missed her every day.
Ted was a wonderful father who lived the example he wanted his children Phyllis, Teddy, Jr. and Regina to follow. He was a soft-spoken man but when he disciplined, he had only to “give-you-the eye” and you knew you better behave. He taught his children honesty and the value of working hard.
Ted loved the Lord in his quiet and faithful way. He was a longtime, devoted member of First Baptist Church. Ted was a Charter member of the Parlor class.
Ted was a hard worker and said the Lord always provided a job for him. As well as farming, He was a mechanic, delivered milk for the Sunshine Dairy in Shamrock, worked for the Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. in Pampa and then was a well-respected employee of Cabot Corporation for 36 years.
Ted and LaDell were both leaders in the Gray County 4-H Club. He always loved farm and ranch animals; horses, cattle and sheep and would make pets out of them in no time at all. When he drove up to his “horse lot”, the animals would come running to him for a treat.
He loved woodworking and made trivets and quilt racks out of either ash or pine for family and friends.
Ted had an incredible memory, without having to write things down. He enjoyed cars and attending car shows. He especially loved his 1973 Ford Bronco. He liked going to farm auctions and to car lots on Sundays.
Ted and LaDell’s favorite place to vacation was Cabot Ranch in Colorado. He loved fishing with his wife and teaching others how to bait a hook and fish. Evenings around the fire with friends was a favorite pastime.
He was PaPaw and Grandpa to his 6 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 3 great-greatgrandchildren.
Survivors are his children, Phyllis Stuckey (Schuyler) of Frisco, Teddy Atwood, Jr. (Rhonda) of Pampa, and Regina Sandefur (John) of Borger. Ted created wonderful memories with his six grandchildren, Shawn (Allison) Stuckey of Dallas, Brandon (Michelle) Stuckey of Gainesville, Georgia, Jimmy Atwood of Pampa, Carmen Parker of Nederland, Caren Garrard of Skellytown and Zachary (Bertha) Sandefur of Scott City, Kansas. He had 16 great-grandchildren, Jackson and Drew Stuckey, Jonathan, Joshua, Jaina and Juliana Stuckey, Eric (Charity) Cook, Kiley Fite, Devin and Holly Patterson, Mathew Robinson, Colton and Kai Garrard, Nathan, Alissa and Orion Sandefur and great-great grandfather to 3 children, Aliyah, Alexzander and Kora Cook. Ted also leaves behind nieces, nephews and many other family members and friends who will miss him greatly.
Ted outlived his six brothers and one sister. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Viola “Ma” Atwood, his parents, Thomas and Florence Atwood of Wheeler, three infant siblings; his brothers, Dick, Sox and Jack of Wheeler and his sister, Wilma Louise “Cricket” of Crowell; a grandchild, Caren Garrard and three great grandchildren, Jacob, Christopher, and Eron Stuckey.
